Join American Hauntings for a private ghost hunt at perhaps the most haunted location in Southwest Pennsylvania – Nemacolin Castle! Journey to Brownsville, Pennsylvania and explore the actively haunted castle and spend the night looking for the ghosts that are believed to wander the hallways, passages, and corridors of this eerie mansion. This is your chance to find out if Nemacolin Castle is as haunted as so many people claim!
Built on a high bluff overlooking the famous National Road and the Monongahela River, the three-story mansion with its ramparts and turret pre-dates the town of Brownsville. Built on land where an Indian burial ground was located, the castle was also the site of the French and Indian War garrison, Fort Burd in 1759, built along the Nemacolin Trail.
In 1786, Jacob Bowman established a trading post on the site of the old fort, making it the first home to be located on what would later be the Castle. The business thrived along the new National Road, but Bowman, realizing that the huge cost of transporting goods across the mountains, decided to start producing needed items for settlers in Brownsville. He started a nail factory, paper mill, and produced machine parts. He also became the town’s postmaster, justice of the peace, and established the first national bank in the area.
As Bowman’s wealth grew, so did his family. He and his wife, Isabella, had nine children, so they began working on a larger home. This led to the construction of the central section of the present-day Castle, built around the original trading post. It was completed in the early 1800s. More sections of the Castle were built over the next several decades, resulting in the grand, towering structure that exists today. The Castle remained in the Bowman family until it was donated to the Fayette County Historical Society. It's now maintained by the Brownsville Historical Society and is listed on the National Historic Register.
Over the years, the Castle has acquired many secrets – and many ghosts.
Jacob Bowman was an ardent abolitionist before the Civil War, and, thanks to its location north of the Maryland border and near West Virginia, the Castle became a station on the Underground Railroad. During the early decades of the nineteenth century, hundreds of escaped slaves were hidden at the Castle as they made their way to freedom in the North.
Could they be among the spirits that linger in this house? Perhaps, for there seemed to be many of them. Staff members and visitors to the Castle have long reported strange happening in the place, from heavy, disembodied footsteps to slamming doors, the erratic behavior of lights, and actual apparitions. The ghost of a little girl, who is normally seen in the middle part of the house, has been reported dozens of times over the years. A small boy, a stern-looking woman, a ghostly little dog, and an elderly man -- believed to be Jacob Bowman himself -- have also been reported throughout the house.
Don't miss out on your chance to experience this haunted part of American history!
